Review of Movie Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

Love stories can become pretty clichéd, but if you talk about new age romance, the conversations can become quite complicated and interesting.

‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ (‘ELKDTAL’) is an unconventional story about finding love and acceptance.

The film uses a large number of stereotypes to tell a modern and relevant story.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga PUBLIC REVIEW

The fact that it brings a stationary subject as homosexuality to a mainstream film is one of the strong points.

Fortunately, the progressive theme and the emotional quotient of the film help to rise above a scenario that has no gloss.

The film starts with the traditional boy-meets-girl line-up, in which Sahil gets emotionally carried away.

A random but beautiful girl, Sweety, takes his hand and pulls him into a chase.

And the boy, as you might expect, falls in love and sets out to track down the girl and confess his immortal love.

Most of the first half of the film is spent on setting up this rather old-fashioned depiction of courtship.

The sympathetic but conservative family of Punjabi is also proportioned in the story,

as the usual Beeji (Madhumalti Kapoor), Veerji (Abhishek Duhan) and Papaji, Balbir (Anil Kapoor) bring the essential family drama.

The film spends a bit too much time setting up the deliberate but misleading song that is essentially built for the ultimate confession of Sweety.

Once she emerges and reveals that the romance between the boy and the girl will not become reality, the film of acceleration also changes.

The second half, although still somewhat predictable, is concerned with a sensitive and beautiful representation of a girl who is stuck in her own emotions.

The story of a father who mastered the sexuality and the oppressed emotions of his daughter is moving.

Although somewhat theatrical,

‘ELKDTAL’ produces a progressive and important conversation about personal feelings and the true liberating nature of love.

All this takes place in the most fun and entertaining way, which in a sense is also the power of the film.

Most of the entertainment comes from the performances of Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, and Rajkummar Rao.

Sonam K Ahuja plays the central role and although she manages to acquire the required vulnerability for her character, she does not always convince you of Sweety’s emotional conflict.

But some dizzying performances by Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao add a real punch to the procedure.

The cute romantic comedy between Kapoor and Chawla is also a bull’s eye.

Supporting performances by Madhumalti Kapoor, Abhishek Duhan, Regina, Seema Pahwa, and Brijendra Kala are all top notch.

Writer-director Shelly Chopra Dhar and co-writer Gazal Dhaliwal (who previously wrote Irrfan’s ‘Qarib Qarib Single’) manage to generate some pretty interesting ideas about love.

Yes, their film is about sexuality and the search for acceptance of the older and more conservative family members,

but in essence ‘ELKDTAL’ speaks of love as a universal feeling, a feeling that can not be chained to social norms and dictates.

Writing is not all of the top quality, but this film has its heart in the right place and sometimes that is the only thing that really matters.
